Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the classic and often-required read, is a story we all know. Two children from feuding families fall into a forbidden love that results in both their deaths. Re-contextualizing the classic, we adapted the text and set the play in the Great Depression with the Montagues and Capulets steeped in poverty. Our aim is to portray Romeo and Juliet not as naive children, but as young people searching for hope and ritual in a world absent of both.
The School of Music, Theatre and Dance present Juliet, adapted from Shakespeare, written and directed by SMTD students Kellie Beck and Alix Lila Curnow, with music by Sammy Sussman and choreography by Micky Esteban.
Free and open to the public.
